Find the real roots of x^{4} = 16

Solution:

x^{4} = 16

(i.e.,) x^{4} – 4^{2} = 0

⇒ (x^{2} + 4)(x^{2} – 4) = 0

x^{2} + 4 = 0 will have no real roots

so solving x^{2} – 4 = 0

If x = 2 is one root of x^{3} + 2x^{2} – 5x – 6 = 0 then find the other roots of the equation

Solution:

x = 2 is a root

so applying synthetic division

∴ The other factor is x^{2} + 4x + 3

Now x^{3} + 2x^{2} – 5x – 6 = (x – 2)(x^{2} + 4x + 3)

∴ x^{3} + 2x^{2} – 5x – 6 = 0 ⇒ (x – 2)(x^{2} + 4x + 3)

x – 2 = 0 or x^{2} + 4x + 3 = 0

x = 2 or (x + 1)(x + 3) = 0

⇒ x = -1 or -3

so the roots are x = -1, 2, -3
