Stanza 1 :
I am a wonderful tree. I am still inside the seed. My little seedling is buried deep in the seed. I can grow into a strong tree but now I am still asleep.

Stanza 2 :
The sun saw me. He asked me to wake up and shine. The rain began to fall. It asked me to get up. The rain promised to give me food.

THE COCONUT GROVE
தென்னந்தோப்பு :
இனியா என்பவள் பெரிய பழுப்பு நிறக் கண்களைக் கொண்ட ஒரு சிறுமி. அவள் தன் பெற்றோருடன், ஒரு சிறிய நீலநிற ஏரிக்கு (blue lake) அருகில் உள்ள தென்னந்தோப்பில் (coconut grove) வசித்து வந்தாள். அவள் ஏரிக்கு அருகில் உள்ள தன் பெற்றோருக்கு உதவி செய்வாள். பள்ளிக்குச் செல்வாள். அவர்களுடன் பொழுதுபோக்கி மறுநாள் எழுந்துவிடுவாள் (wake up). அவள் ஏரியை நோக்கி இறங்கிச் செல்லும்போது ஒரு காலிக் கூடையை (empty basket) தன் தலையில் சமநிலையில் வைத்துக் கொண்டு (balanced) நடப்பது வழக்கம். அவளது அம்மா சலவை செய்ய வேண்டிய துணிகளுடன் (laundry) பின்னால் நடந்து வருவாள். அவளது அப்பா பெரிய மீன் பிடிக்கும் வலையைக் (fishing net) கொண்டு வருவார்.
ஏரியில் உள்ள ஒரு பெரிய கல்லில் (stone) அம்மா துணி துவைப்பாள். அந்தச் சமயம் அவளது அப்பா மீன் பிடிக்கச் செல்வார். அவர் கரைக்கு (to the shore) வலையை இழுத்து வரும்போது (dragged) அவர்கள் ஒரு பெரிய கூடையில் மீன்களைச் சேகரித்துக் கொள்வார்கள் (collected).
சில நேரங்களில் அந்த வலையில் ஒரு ஆமை (turtle) சிக்கிக் கொள்ளும். ஆனால் இனியா அதைக் காப்பாற்ற (save) ஓடோடி வருவாள். ஒரு நாள் வெயில் காயும் காலை நேரத்தில் (sunny morning), தன் தந்தையுடன் மீன் பிடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தபோது இனியா கேட்டாள் “அப்பா, நாம் தினந்தோறும் நிறைய மீன் பிடிக்கிறோம். இங்கே மீன்களே இல்லாமல் போய் விட்டால் என்ன செய்வது?” அவளது அம்மா சிரித்துக்கொண்டே அவளைப் பள்ளிக்கு அனுப்பி வைத்துவிட்டாள். மரநிழலில் (shade) இனியாவின் அம்மா நிம்மதியற்ற தூக்கத்தில் (uneasy sleep) ஆழ்ந்துவிட்டாள்.
மீன்கள் இல்லாத ஏரியைப் பற்றி அவள் கனவு கண்டாள்(dreamt). அந்தக் கனவில், அப்பா தினந்தோறும் மீன்கள் இல்லாமல் வருவதையும், குடும்பத்திற்கு ஆதரவான (support) வருமானம் இல்லாமல் போனதையும் தன் கனவில் கண்டாள்.
அப்போது காற்று (wind) அவளிடம் கூறியது “நீரும் நிலமும் எப்போதும் உங்கள் குடும்பத்தைக் கவனித்து, பராமரித்து (taken care of) வருகின்றன. நீங்கள் அதற்குப் பதிலாக (in return) அவற்றைப் பராமரித்துக் கொள்ளவேண்டும்.”
அவள் கண்களில் கண்ணீர்த் துளிகளுடன் விழித்தெழுந்தாள் (woke up). போதுமான அளவு மீனை விற்காமல் இனியாவை எப்படி வளர்ப்பது (bring up) என்று அவளுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை .

பிற்பகல் முழுவதும் (all afternoon) அவள் தென்ன ம் பாய்களை (coconut mats) முடைந்து கொண்டே (weaving) தன் கனவைப் பற்றி நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தாள். அன்றிரவு, எண்ணெய் விளக்கு (oil lamp) இரவில் நெடுநேரம் எரிந்து கொண்டிருக்க, தனது பெற்றோர் கிசுகிசுவெனப் பேசுவதை (whisper) இனியா கேட்டாள்.
மறுநாள் காலை அவளது அப்பா அவளிடம் ஒரு சிறிய கூடையைக் கொடுத்தார்.
“எல்லா மீன்களையும் எப்படி இந்தச் சிறிய கூடையில் வைத்து சுமக்க முடியும்?” என இனியா கேட்டாள்.
“இந்தக்கூடை எவ்வளவு பிடிக்கிறதோ (as many fish as fit inside) அவ்வளவு மீன்களை மட்டும் மீன் பிடிப்போம்.”
இனியாவுக்கு ஒரே குழப்பமாகிவிட்டது (was puzzled) “இது எப்படி நமக்குப் போதும்?” என அவள் அதிசயித்தாள் (won dered). அவள் பள்ளிக் கூடத்திலிருந்து வீட்டிற்குத் திரும்பி வந்த போது, அம்மா தேங்காய்களைப் பயன்படுத்தி சோப்பு மற்றும் எண்ணெய் தயாரித்துக் கொண்டிருப்பதைப் பார்த்து மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்தாள்.
இனியா விரைவாக (swiftly) ஒரு மரத்தின் மீது ஏறி இன்னும் அதிகத் தேங்காய் பறிக்கப் போனாள். ஆனால் அவளுடைய அம்மா “அவற்றைப் பறிக்க (pluck) வேண்டாம். நமக்கு மரம் எவ்வளவு கொடுக்கிறதோ, அதை மட்டும் நாம் பயன்படுத்துவோம்” எனக் கூறினாள்.
“இவற்றைத் தயாரிக்க நாங்கள் கீழே விழுந்த தேங்காய்களை (fallen coconuts) மட்டுமே பயன்படுத்துகிறோம். இங்கே பார், ஒரு – மல்லிகைப் பூவை (jasmine flower) உள்ளே வைத்து ஒரு சோப்பைத் – தயாரித்து இருக்கிறோம்” என அவளது அப்பா கூறினார்.
தோட்டக்கலை பற்றியும் பிற கலைகளைப் பற்றியும் இனியா நிறைய (a 10t) பள்ளியில் படித்திருக்கிறாள். சற்று வளர்ந்த பிறகு , இனியா செடிகளின் பானையை நிரப்பத் தேவையான தேங்காய் நாரை (coconut fibre) தயாரிக்க ஆரம்பித்தாள். தேங்காய் மேல் செதுக்குவதிலும் (carve) அவள் ஆர்வம் காட்டினாள். கீழே விழுந்த தேங்காய்களை வைத்து பொம்மைகளையும் (toys) சிலைகளையும் (idols) அவள் உருவாக்கினாள். தேங்காய் – சிரட்டைகளிலிருந்து (coconut shells) சின்னஞ்சிறிய ஆமைகளை (tiny turtles) செதுக்குவது அவளுக்குப் பிடித்தமான ஒன்றாக (favourite) மாறிவிட்டது. அதில் ஒன்றை எப்பொழுதும் தன் – கழுத்தைச் சுற்றி அணிந்து கொண்டாள் (wore).
