சாரு என்பவள் கெட்டிக்காரச் (smart) சிறுமி. அவள் அறிவுக் கூர்மை கொண்டவள் (bright). அவள் அனைவரிடமும் அன்பாக (kind) நடந்து கொள்வாள். ஆனால் அவளது நண்பர்கள் மத்தியில் அவள் மகிழ்ச்சி இல்லாதவளாகக் (unhappiest) காணப்பட்டாள். அல்லது குறைந்த பட்சம் (at least) தான் அப்படி இருப்பதாக அவள் நினைத்துக் கொண்டாள்.

அவளது நண்பர்கள் எப்படி இருந்தனர்? சாருவுக்கு நண்பர்களே கிடையாது. யாருமே அவளோடு விளையாட விரும்புவதில்லை. ஏனெனில் அவளது தலைக்குமேல் ஒரு மேகம் (cloud) தொங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தது (hanging).

அந்த மேகத்தில் ஆரஞ்சுத் தோல்கள் (peels) பிஸ்கட் பொட்டலங்கள், உடைந்த பொம்மைகள், பென்சில் சீவல்கள் (shavings), நெளிந்து கிடக்கும் (twisted) பிளாஸ்டிக் புட்டிகள், பலநிறம் கொண்ட (colourful) பிளாஸ்டிக் பைகள் இருந்தன. இவற்றைச் சுற்றி (surrounded by) இரைந்து செல்லும் ஈக்களின் (buzzing bees) கூட்டம் (swarm) காணப்பட்டது.

தன் தலைக்கு மேல் குப்பை (trash) மேகம் போல் தொங்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் சிறுமியோடு யாரும் விளையாட விரும்ப மாட்டார்கள். அழுகிப் போன வாழைப் பழத்தோல் (rotten banana peel) உங்கள் தலையில் விழுந்து விட்டால் என்ன ஆகும்?

சாருவால் கண்ணாமூச்சி (hide-and-seek) கூட இனிமேல் ஆட முடியாது. அந்த மேகமே அவளைக் காட்டிக் கொடுத்து விடும். “நாம் இருவரும் சேர்ந்து (together) பள்ளிக்குப் போகலாம்” என அவள் சோனாவிடம் கூறினாள். உடனே சோனா எதிர்த்திசையில் (opposite direction) ஓடிப் போய் விட்டாள் (ran off).

”உன்னுடைய பென் சிலை எனக்கு இரவலாகக் கொடுப்பாயா?” என அவள் கேட்டாள்.

உடனே Jancy முகம் சுளித்துக் கொண்டு (made a face) தான் உட்கார்ந்து கொண்டிருந்த இடத்தை மாற்றி ஆஷா பக்கத்தில் போய் அமர்ந்து கொண்டாள். சாரு தனது மதிய உணவைக் கூட தனியாகத்தான் சாப்பிட வேண்டியிருந்தது.

அம்மா சொன்னதை தான் கேட்டிருக்க வேண்டும். (should have listened) என சாரு நினைத்தாள். அம்மா அவளிடம் குப்பைகளைப் போடாதே (not to litter) என எப்போதும் கூறுவாள்.

“வாழைப்பழத் தோலை (banana peel) சாலையில் போடாதே”

“காலியான பிஸ்கெட் உறையை குப்பைக் கூடையில் A (dustbin) போடு”

ஆனால், சாரு இதைக் கேட்பதே இல்லை. அவள் சிரித்துக் கொண்டே தொடர்ந்து குப்பைகளைக் கீழே எறிந்து கொண்டுதான் இருந்தாள் (kept littering). அவளுக்கு தனது சுற்றுப்புறத்தைப் (surroundings) பற்றிக் கவலையே இல்லை .

“சீக்கிரமே (soon) இந்தக் குப்பை எல்லாம் (all this trash) உன்னைப் பின் தொடர்ந்து வர ஆரம்பிக்கும்” என ஒருநாள் அம்மா அவளிடம் கோபமாகப் பேசினாள்.

சாரு வெறுமனே (just) சிரித்துக் கொண்டாள். அடுத்த நாள் சாரு தூங்கி எழுந்த போது (woke up) அங்கே துர்நாற்றம் (foul smell) வீசியது. ஈக்கள் மொய்க்கும் ஓசையும் (buzzing) கேட்டது. அவனது தலைக்கு மேலே குப்பைகள் ஒரு மேகம் போல் (cloud of trash) தொங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தன.

அம்மாவின் வார்த்தைகள் உண்மையாகிவிட்டன. சாரு அங்கிருந்து ஓடிவிட முயன்றாள். ஆனால் எல்லா இடத்திற்கும் குப்பைகளும் அவளைப் பின் தொடர்ந்து வந்தன. ஒரு விளக்குமாற்றை (broom) எடுத்து அவள் அந்தக் குப்பை மேகத்தைப் பெருக்க (sweep) முயன்றாள். ஆனாலும் அந்தக் குப்பை மேகம் அவளது தலைக்கு மேலேயே இருந்தது.

சாகு எல்லா முயற்சிகளையும் மேற்கொண்டாள். அவள் அலறினாள் (screamed). தன்னைத் தனியே விட்டு விடும்படி (leave her alone) அந்த மேகத்தைக் கேட்டுக் கொண்டாள். அவள் அதைக் குப்பைக் கூடைக்குள் எறிய முயன்றாள். ஆனால் அது ) கூடைக்குள் போகவில்லை. எனவே சாருவுக்கு அதிகக் ) கவலையாகப் போய்விட்டது. அப்போது அங்கு ஒன்று நடந்தது . (happened). பூங்காவின் அருகில் உள்ள சாலையில் பாலா ஒரு வாழைப்பழத் தோலை எறிவதைப் பார்த்தாள்.

சாருவுக்கு அதிக எரிச்சலாக இருந்தது (annoyed). அவளது தலைக்கு மேலே உள்ள மேகத்தை அவனால் பார்க்க முடியவில்லையா?

“வாழைப்பழத் தோலை சாலையில் எறியாதே. யாராவது வழுக்கி விழுந்து விடுவார்கள் (slip)” என அவள் சத்தம் போட்டாள் (yelled). பாலா குப்பை மேகத்திற்குப் பயந்து போய் (scared of) வாழைப்பழத் தோலை குப்பைக் கூடையில் போட்டான்.

மறுநாள் குப்பை மேகம் சிறிதாகப் போய்விட்டது. “இது எப்படி நடந்தது (happened)?” என சாரு அதிசயித்தாள். அதன் பின் அமுதா மாமி பிளாஸ்டிக் பைகளை மருத்துவமனைக்கு அருகில் போடுவதைப் பார்த்தாள். “மாமி, அந்த பிளாஸ்டிக் பைகளை எடுத்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள் (pick up). நீங்கள் மறுபடியும் அதைப் பயன்படுத்தலாம்” என சாரு கூறினாள். அமுதா மாமி அந்தப் பிளாஸ்டிக் பைகளை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு அங்கிருந்து அகன்று சென்றாள் (left).

மறுநாள் காலை சாரு விழித்தெழுந்தபோது அந்தக் குப்பை மேகம் இன்னும் சிறியதாகப் போய்விட்டது. சாரு புன்னகை புரிந்தாள். அவள் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டுமென அவளுக்குத் தெரிந்து விட்டது.

பள்ளியில் யாராவது பிஸ்கட் உறையையோ பென்சில் சீவல்களையோ தூக்கி எறிந்தால் (threw away), சாரு அவர்களைத் தடுத்து நிறுத்தினாள்.

அவள் ஹோட்டல்களின் அருகில் நெளிந்து போன (twisted) பிளாஸ்டிக் புட்டிகள் கிடந்தால் அதைக் குப்பைக் கூடையில் போடுவாள். அந்த கிராமம் சுத்தமாக, இன்னும் சுத்தமாக மாறியது. அத்துடன் சாருவின் மேகமும் சிறியதாக, இன்றும் சிறியதாக மாற ) ஆரம்பித்தது. கடைசியில் ஒரு நாள் அது காணாமலே போய் விட்டது (it had gone). முற்றிலுமாய் மறைந்து போனது (completely gone). அனேகமாக சாருதான் இப்போது இந்த உலகத்தில் மிக மகிழ்ச்சியான சிறுமியாகும். அதன்பின் சாரு – குப்பை போடுவதில்லை . ரகசியமாக (secretly) அந்த கிராமம் சுத்தமாக இருப்பதை அவள் விரும்பினாள். ஆனால் அந்தக் குப்பை மேகம், என்றாவது ஒரு நாள்.
